Andrew L. Chernak. The Model 1857 smooth bore field gun was developed in France and named for Emperor Napoleon III. The "work horse" of Civil War artillery, the 12 Pounder had no peer at close range: Robert E. Lee wrote to the Secretary of War, "The best guns for field service, in my opinion, are the 12 Pound Napoleon guns."
