Founded by world renowned marksman Hiram Berdan and armed with Spencer breechloaders, the 1st and 2nd U.S. Sharpshooters Regiments - known as "Berdan's Sharpshooters" - were comprised of expert Union marksmen who operated in small teams, using stealth and cover while trying to maintain distance from the enemy.
